Pears and Plums on Blue

Pam Simpson

I have drawn and painted for as long as I can remember.
After leaving school in the mid '50s I studied at the Byam Shaw and Central Schools of Art in London, later qualified as an art teacher in the '70s and continued my art education in the '80s, gaining a BA in Fine art and Critical Studies at St Martin's School of Art.
I enjoy travelling and over the years have furthered my art appreciation in countless museums, in many countries.

My work has been exhibited in galleries, arts centres, open studios, with community groups and arts festivals. Since the mid '70s I have taught drawing and painting in schools, colleges of Further and Adult Education, and privately. Currently I am a Painting Tutor with the Open College of the Arts.

The subject matter for my paintings is varied, as is my use of media.

The still lifes reflect my love of colour, my enjoyment of the sensuality of objects, and my interest in the ambiguity of solid forms depicted on flat patterned surfaces as well as in the long history of the genre.

The landscapes are largely derived from fleeting glimpses on journeys - from sketches, notes and memories. I am intrigued by the way landscape painting of the past can affect our view of the landscape of the present.

Living near the sea, I am fascinated by its continually changing light and colour. The seascapes are an attempt to catch something of this transience.

Currently a selection of the seascapes is on display in the Albert Bar at South Parade Pier, Southsea PO4 0SW, Telephone 02392 732283.
